Russian bear forced to ice skate kills circus manager and injures trainer

An bear forced to ice-skate with a touring Russian circus has killed a circus manager and seriously injured a trainer in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek.

The five-year-old bear, who had been made to wear skates at the time, attacked the manager and then severely mauled another circus worker who tried to rescue the manager.

Kyrgyz police shot and killed the bear when they arrived on the scene.

Germans eat more than 1,000 animals in their lifetime

A study has estimated that Germans each eat more than 1,000 animals in their lifetime, not including fishes and other aquatic animals.

On average individual Germans consume four cows, four calves, four sheep, 46 pigs, 37 ducks and 46 turkeys as well as 12 geese and 945 chickens plus an unknown quantity of fishes and other aquatic animals.

Cruelty row over EU animal test rules

BRITISH civil servants have been shocked by the degree of suffering permitted by proposed European Union rules on animal experiments.

The draft EU directive “on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes” would allow monkeys, dogs, cats and foals to be used for experiments leading to severe and lasting pain.

Sweden killing thousands of stray rabbits and turning them into biofuel

Thousands of rabbits living in parks in the centre of Stockholm, some wild and others abandoned companion animals, are being shot in an attempt to "protect trees and shrubbery" and then turned into bio-fuel to heat homes.

The bodies of the rabbits are taken to a heating plant, where along with cats, deer, horses and cows, they are burnt as fuel for heating. Last year 6,000 rabbits were killed in this way.

Bull fleeing bullring shot dead

A young bull that managed to escape from a bullring in Marbella and went wandering around the town has been shot dead by police, who also hit him with their patrol car.

The bull injured a 72 year old woman, who has been taken to hospital. The woman was walking along the main street when the bull ran into her, although the woman was not gored.

Animal Equality activists have staged a demonstration outside the Spanish parliament in Madrid to place a commemorative plaque and a wreath of flowers in memory of Moscatel, the bull whose death in Tordesillas on 15 September was filmed by Animal Equality, as well as in memory of all other victims of such ‘festivals’. The plaque reads “Moscatel. February 2005 – September 2009. In memory of all the victims of Tordesillas. Igualdad Animal”.
